On 6th March 2018, Ghana celebrated it’s 61st Independence from British Colonial Rule and that is our Country of feature… where the WEKU story begins.

Ghana Flag: Red (the blood shed for independence), Yellow (country’s mineral wealth), Green (country’s forests) and Black Star (lodestar symbol used in the freedom struggle).

The word Ghana means Warrior King and was the title accorded to the kings of the medieval West African Ghana Empire.  Geographically, the Ghana Empire was approximately

500 miles (800 km) north and west of modern Ghana, and it ruled territories in the area of the Sénégal River and east towards the Niger River, in modern Senegal, Mauritania and Mali.

Ghana was adopted as the legal name for the Gold Coast combined with British Togoland upon gaining Independence on 6 March 1957.

Ghana (former Gold Coast) sits in the West Coast of Africa with Côte D’Ivoire on the west, Burkina Faso on the north, Togo on the East and the Gulf of Guinea to the south (coastline spanning the full south of Ghana.   Ghana is divided into 10 regions, and further split into a total of 170 districts. The regions and their capitals are: Ashanti (Kumasi), Brong Ahafo (Sunyani), Central (Cape Coast), Eastern (Koforidua), Greater Accra (Accra), Northern (Tamale), Upper East (Bolgatanga), Upper West (Wa), Volta (Ho) and Western (Sekondi-Takoradi ‘Twin cities’).

Ghana has Kotoka International Airport as it’s aeroplane port and Tema (eastern part of Greater Accra) as it’s main sea port. On average, a flight to Ghana ranges from £395 – £950 depending on the airline, direct or stop-over flights and the time of the year that you make the trip.
